Project description

The Mill O’Mains estate in Dundee was originally built in the mid-1960s and consisted mainly of three, four and five-storey blocks of flats for social rent. The flats had fallen into disrepair over the years. Many residents were living in sub-standard properties and there was clear evidence of fuel poverty, fear of crime and a community which had become disjointed.

Providing high demand housing on new streets, good quality public open spaces and safer, better connections were the main objectives in the regeneration of Mill O Mains.

Road and pedestrian access across the estate have been vastly improved through a new network of well-lit roads, wider pathways and house design layouts which incorporate in-curtilage parking. The standard of accommodation has also been brought up to modern standards, with a mix of townhouse terraces, two-storey flats, semi-detached and bungalows, some of which include specially designed provision of disability living space.

Millard Consulting has been providing full engineering support for the project, including civil, structural and environmental engineering services. A development of this nature provides a challenge when designing new infrastructure, not least due to the existing layout being full of public utilities requiring diversion. New sewers have been designed and installed while maintaining drainage to existing properties and the existing road network has been utilised and upgraded where possible. The project is now well on the way to completion, with many houses handed over and occupied by new tenants.
