Hydrology
We have over twenty years experience providing hydrology consulting services. Flood risk assessment, while the commonest topic encountered within hydrology, is just one part of the picture. It is through a detailed understanding of an environments’ hydrology that risk to property may be evaluated. At Millard we have the experience and skills to build hydrological models that inform flood risk assessments, and infrastructure and drainage design solutions to ameliorate risk, using a variety of well established modelling techniques and software tools, which have found national and global accreditation for their suitability to river and coastal modelling.
a full water management capability; from analysis and modelling to infrastructure design
- Rainfall Analysis – Selection of appropriate rainfall duration/intensity.
- Catchment Analysis – Identification of the characteristics of the catchment using the Flood Estimation Handbook methods.
- Catchment Flows – WINFAP-FEH software.
- Hydrographs – using ISIS hydrological software.
- Runoff Potential, Runoff Control – Assessment and design
- Watercourse Hydraulics – surface profiles, flood plain storage, 1D & 2D modelling .
- Flood Mitigation – reduction of flood peaks, flood volumes, compensation volumes, escape strategies, sustainable drainage.
Depending on the requirements of any specific project we have the capability of creating one or two dimensional hydraulic models; or a combination of both. One dimensional hydrodynamic modelling is an established technique for the analysis of river systems. Flood extents and depths can be investigated, for various flow conditions and time steps within a flood event. Flood flow paths are represented by modelling rivers as uniform channels and a branched or looped network of these channels can represent a floodplain and river system. Hydraulic structures can be included in the analysis. Although the analysis is sufficiently detailed for some projects; because natural floodplains are not uniform in shape, vegetation cover or elevation, one dimensional models have limited accuracy.
Two dimensional flood modelling allows a more detailed representation of floodplains on a finer scale and can accurately establish flow patterns in coastal waters, estuaries, rivers, floodplains and within inundated urban areas. It is much closer to reality and eliminates uncertainties. It also permits the accurate analysis of flood defence breach scenarios in coastal, tidal or fluvial locations. Modelling software includes TUFLOW, Infoworks RS / ISIS, HEC-RAS and Micro-Drainage.
Flood Risk
The assessment of flood risk receives increasing attention driven both by climate change and a competing pressures for limited available development land. All new developments or change of use proposals which appear to be at risk of flooding in Scotland are required to comply with Scottish Planning Policy. Millard Consulting provide a full range of services for the assessment and management of river, coastal and urban flood risks, providing innovative and cost effective solutions where required.

When a potential flood risk is identified by either SEPA, the Environment Agency or the Local Authority a flood risk assessment will be required for development sites before receiving Planning approval. Our experience is that early engagement with the authorities ensures flood management issues are dealt with constructively, easing the approval process.
Where required, flood mitigation measures can be incorporated into the detailed development design. An early appreciation of the potential flood risk helps with design of cost effective measures, their approval by the regulatory authorities and minimises any potential impacts on other development considerations such as the design of the drainage provision or earthworks.
Our flood risk team have more than 30 years’ experience and can successfully tailor flood risk assessments and any subsequent management and mitigation to the specific requirements of each site, with the objective of achieving a cost effective solution and enabling development feasibility.
Environmental
Assessment of land quality is essential to manage the financial liability of land acquisition, divestment and property development. With increasing focus of development opportunity on brownfield, appreciating the quality of that land is an important early stage in site selection, feasibility assessment and development planning. Being well informed ensures unforeseen ground conditions do not escalate costs or hold up progress once a project has gained momentum
Millard Consulting cover all stages of land quality assessment from due diligence to remediation verification.
- Strategic land assessment
- Hydrogeological risk assessment
- Demolition project management
- Pre-planning risk screening
- Water supply site assessment reports
- Purification of planning conditions
- Asbestos risk assessment / management
- Phase I, II and III risk assessment
- Qualitative risk assessment

Brownfield developments require land quality risk assessment for regulatory approval during Planning. In our considerable experience, early engagement with the process removes obstacles and ensures land contamination issues are dealt with constructively, achieving regulatory confidence and easing the approval process.
Where required, remediation can often be incorporated into a scheme design. An understanding of ground conditions not only informs risk assessment but is necessary for design of foundations, and site infrastructure. Our engineering experts have a clear focused approach to land contamination risk assessment and management and work together to create development solutions that design out problems.
Experience shows that with the right approach much brownfield can successfully be made suitable for new use, without significant complication or cost. On each project our range of environmental services are tailored to your specific requirements.
