Project description
We were appointed by the University of Abertay, Dundee in 2009 to provide structural and civil engineering services for the new Scottish Centre for Excellence in Computer Games Education. The project involved complete refurbishment of one floor of the existing Kydd Building at the University`s Bell Street Campus, along with external over-cladding and an extension to form a new Brise Soliel feature and balconies.
The project was extended in the summer of 2010 to include the over-cladding of a further elevation and again in 2011 to include refurbishment of two further floor levels internally and construction of a new stair and lift tower on the west elevation of the Kydd Building.
Structural engineering services included extensive surveys of the existing buildings to establish their form and construction, the design of the steel frames and concrete floors for the Brise Soliel and the new stair tower. This included the design of all new foundations including piled foundations for the stair tower.
Civil engineering services for external works included the design of drainage for the revised car park, re-alignment of the access roadway from Bell Street, design of the structure of the new external stairs and hard landscaping areas.
Millard Consulting worked closely with the Client, Architect, Services Engineer, Quantity Surveyor and Contractor throughout the extended project to ensure a coordinated approach and a successful project conclusion.
