Project description

Webster Theatre, Arbroath – Listed Building, Webster Memorial Hall, was converted from a small community venue in the 1960’s, reopening as the Webster Theatre in 1970. Over three decades later the theatre was in need of significant aesthetic and operational modernisation. A predominantly community based theatre, it serves both Arbroath and the wider rural community of Angus.

The upgrading and refurbishment included:

  • Stonework repairs to listed façade
  • New floor to assembly room
  • Structural alterations to the balcony
  • Replacement of lighting bridge
  • Incorporation of stage lift

The main refurbishment and upgrading contract commenced in May 2006 and the theatre was to critical acclaim in 2008.

Aytoun Hall, Auchterarder – Millard Consulting provided a structural engineering consultancy for the renovation of Aytoun Hall in Auchterarder. This category B listed building required extensive alterations to the internal stone walls and the construction of a new central core to the building, which included the main stair and toilet provision. Although the Victorian building was generally sound on the outside, the internal stone walls were found to be of very poor quality. Alterations included a number of slappings and subsequent strengthening of the random rubble masonry.

The new build central core was constructed of structural masonry, in-situ reinforced concrete floors and a timber truss traditional roof, which accommodated the water tank storage for the building.
